The great Poet Mamdouh Bakhit Ali was born in Abu Simbel, in December 1963. He was only two months old when he and his family were displaced from his village of origin, which would be flooded and drowned by Lake Nasser formed behind the Aswan High Dam. According to his own words, they wandered from the "paradise of God" to the "hell of Wadi Kom Ombo".
He wrote his first song together with a friend, while he was in the secondary school. His teachers loved Nubia and promoted the Nubian language, and as sports delegate of his school, Mamdouh Bakhit had contact with artists of his village and was attracted and influenced by the great masters of the Nubian song and poesy of his time, Abdallah Semel, Seid Jaier and others. At the age of 17 he went to Cairo to search for the brilliant regretted Poet Hussein Jaser, who became his spiritual father.
The "Poet of the Hearts" Mamdouh Bakhit, as he is lovingly called for his deeply affecting love songs, greatly cares for the preservation of the Nubian language, and he cares researching old words to keep their meaning alive and to describe situations with Nubian words to avoid using Arabic, which has greatly penetrated the generations of dislocated Nubians. Like most Nubian writers, poets and singers he strives for teaching Nubian to the young generation, and making it aware of Nubian heritage, customs and traditions.
Mamdouh Bakhit wrote the lyrics for many beautiful songs, made famous by the great composers who wrapped his words into wonderful melodies - like the brilliant Artist, Musician and composer Seid Ibrahim Qurty and Majdi Bata, who also artfully perform his songs singing and playing them, as well as Hisham Bata and Ahmed Himmet. The most prominent other singing artists performing his songs are Adil Bata, Eid Suleiman, and Saber Kena, from Abu Simbel, Ghazi Said, Assem Khitam, as well as young artists like the charismatic Jiddo Seif, Ahmed Ismail, and Mohammed Yousef. Like most other Nubians, the great Poet Mamdouh Bachit's wish is to return to what is left from the lands of Old Nubia, at the shores of Lake Nasser.
