Dr. Mustafa Abdelqader is not only an eminent Nubian poet, composer, musician and singing Artist, but also a great researcher in Nubian heritage, history, culture and traditions. He is the President of the Nubian Heritage Association, which was created in 1981, a member of the arts committee in the Supreme Council of Culture and a Nubian heritage advisor in the Nubian Heritage Documentation Project at the Center for Cultural and Natural Heritage Documentation.
Born in Adindan, a Nubian village at the Nile river in Lower Nubia (Southern Egypt), at the border with Sudan, he spent his first 20 years enjoying the wonderful nature, the simple self-sufficiant Nubian life full of sociable love, solidarity and mutual support, as well as the creative artistic atmosphere of a Nubian village. The forced displacement during the filling of the artificial Lake Nasser and the drowning of his village left a deep wound in the soul of the young man, who felt eradicated from his culture and way of life when he was relocated with his family in an austere crammed village in a desert landscape.
Determined to keep the memory of Old Nubia and its heritage alive, and one day return to Nubian lands - as it was promised to Nubians at the time, he wrote astounding poems artfully describing the deep feelings of despair, frustration and anger felt by the numberless Nubians who had to leave the shores of the Nile, and composed the melodies and initially sang them himself. His famous emotional song "Babur Kusuna" (The ship set sail) tells the story of a young Nubian who is eager to travel to Aswan in the beautiful white ship and see his village on the way - discovering to his distress that his village has been drowned. He recalls his happy youth in the village, and even the mountain's encouraging words can't comfort him. The song was later sung by the wonderful three sisters "Al Balabil" and the exceptional Artist Ghazi Said, and even young Nubians cant retain their tears when hearing it today.
Dr. Mustafa Abdelqader, who obtained a doctorate in the philosophy of folk arts, dedicates all his life to Nubia, helds lectures about and documents all aspects of Nubian heritage - from poems to songs, history to traditions, language to literature, and participates in discussions aiming at restoring the constitutionally granted right of the Nubians to return to their emptied lands and planning the return to the shores of Lake Nasser.
