Saleh Welwele is one of the greatest names of Nubian art. He is not only a singing artist, but also a very prolific poet and composer, and he wrote, composed and sang an enormous amount of songs himself. People who knew him said he was able to write and compose a song every day... he himself pretended he had made more than 2000 songs.
Saleh Welwele, born in Halfa in Old Nubia (Sudan), started singing in 1953, and often participated in artistic gatherings and concerts in Egypt and abroad. His incredibly large repertoire of varied songs includes romantic songs, songs describing the beauty of Old Nubia, but also many songs expressing the pain he and all Nubians felt when they were displaced from their villages and towns of origin to locations in the desert after the creation of the artificial Lake Nasser (also called Lake Nubia).
Even after his death in 2014, Saleh Welwele remains a reference of Nubian artistic creativity. His songs and memory are carried on by his daugher, Zikrayat Welwele, a wonderful Artist who is considered the female ambassador of the Nubian song.
