The great Artist and Musician Abdelmajeed Munawar was born to an artists family in the village Koya, in the Nubian region of Mahas in Northern Sudan. Since his early childhood he liked to sing, the more that his mother was singing all the songs of the famous musicians of that time, starting with the excellent Mohammed Wardy. His voice was recognized and cherished since he was at the primary school. Abdelmajeed also developed his skills playing the Tanbour, the traditional Nubian 5-chord lyre, and the oud, with which he accompanies all his songs.
After the completion of his studies, Abdelmajeed Munawar - or Majid Munawar - later went to work in Saudi Arabia, where many other Nubian artists, poets and musicians were meeting regularly and produced excellent artistic work. He likes cooperating with other great icons of Nubian art, and composes his songs with the contribution of other artists, musicians and poets, like the fantastic Poet Ezz Eldin Abuzeid and the wonderful overall-artist, Poet, Musician, Composer and Singer Mekki Ali Idris.
Many of Abdelmajeed Munawar's songs fearlessly expose the grievances of the Nubians, like the sadness about the drowning of many Nubian villages after the construction of the Aswan High Dam, the displacement to desertic locations, the arson-burining of their palm trees and repression of Nubian demonstrators under former Sudanese and Egyptian governments, as well as the abandonment by young Nubians of their great language, customs and ethic values. However, he also sings beautiful love songs and songs honoring the mother. He is especially appreciative to his mother who is an expert in the Nubian language, and he often asks her for advice when using rare Nubian words in his songs. Abdelmajeed Munawar can certainly be considered part of the greatest Nubian artists.
