The late great artist, musician and singer Saber Asker was born in the Old Nubian village of Qustul, boarding the Nile river, where he started singing traditional songs in his early youth.
After his village - like many others - was submerged by lake Nasser, formed after the construction of the Aswan High Dam, he started singing songs about displacement, longing for his native village and sadness about the Nubians' migration to far-away towns to find a living.
Saber Asker liked to sing in artistic gatherings, and his melodious songs are often sung to this day by several Nubian artists.
